You can use any type of coffee beans in an espresso maker. The secret is that the beans need to be VERY finely ground....virtually to a powder stage. The fine grind allows more coffee to fit into a smaller space (the filter basket) and allows for a stronger extraction. I tend to use French Roast coffee beans without flavoring and grind them very fine. French Roast is about the darkest colored coffee you can find.
